you guys are fucking idiots. mp3s sound like utter shit compared to vinyl. maybe you guys need to wake up and actually listen to music.

not to mention this LP was sourced from a digital master. it's not even real vinyl!

if you're talking about 30-year-old records scratched to hell and back, yeah one's over-compressed digital file might sound cleaner. if you're talking about virgin vinyl, touched by nobody since leaving the factory, one would be hard pressed to find an audio format that gives a cleaner, more defined sound.

vinyl is fashionable but even Mp3 sounds better. think abuot it... you're using a stylus to read a groove that is 3 or 4 steps away from the original master. they cut a laquer, make some plates - it's just not possible for it to sound better than an mp3 - plus you can't bring it anywhere!!! this Beckord is a waste of money for hipsters who want a status item.

Also, in regards to "Dude Said" - I'll bet if you go to his house and inspect his sound system you'll find some garbage pioneer plastic turntable from a yard sale with an ancient

I have a Sony turntable, fully automatic, which is just over a year old. It beats the shit out of your MP3s. MP3 sounds cleaner, but what's the point? It's sterilized to the brink of being useless. Go try listening to Billie Holiday in digital and tell me that it's better than vinyl. Also, portability is not the be all, end all of quality. Can you take a Bose system with you on a jog? Nope, but it's generally agreed that it's one of the finer systems on the planet. But, by your logic, it's shit because you "can't take it anywhere." But really, I'm going to quote an article I read back in October, concerning the Radiohead discbox: "If you don't understand it, it wasn't made for you."

Haha@the vinyl sounds shit comments. What a display of ignorance. Vinyl is the current leader of the audio formats, mp3's sound fucking terrible. If you're going to use a digital format make it FLAC or SACD. Pick up any hifi magazine, what do you see? Turntables and vinyl. It's not about image, its about quality. And no, I don't care what your opinion on sound quality is listening out of your onboard sound on your computer with $100 headphones. PS Bose is also shit.

mp3s and other digital formats are great, they allow you to compile a large music library without taking up space and give you unparalleled portability, but that isn't the end all of music. Vinyl, tapes, cds give you more product for your money, something tactile you can HOLD, liner notes and art you can SEE. some people don't care about this but for others it's very important. This box provides you with make-your-own materials too which is really refreshing and fun. It lets you spend some TIME with the music instead of just having it be a background soundtrack to your life. Although at $175 it's out of most peoples reach. I would love to have this but can't justify spending that kind of money for this. Maybe they will make a regular album too.

What I don't get is the number of actual records in the box... Is this the version with all the remixes or is everything 45rpm?

  • jameson said...

It is the vinyl version of the deluxe edition I imagine. So it would have all 24 tracks. The 18 regular tracks, 6 remixes and 3 bonus tracks.

Cd v. Vinyl is a valid debate. Mp3 v. vinyl is not. A good stereo makes vinyl sound better. A good stereo makes one realize how shitty Mp3s sound. Mp3s have their place, but hi-fidelity is not one of them.

I'm buying this for the colored pens. My local Office Depot is clean out and I figure the $175 price tag is reasonable enough considering the shortage. Color me broke! The vinyl is a nice bonus, though. Can a LaserDisc player play them?

Rick Pickle? What the hell are you talking about? Can we please speak compression ratios? 4 records, all cut to under 15 minutes per side means ZERO compression - no sound information lost. Any mp3 format implies compression: high and low end sounds are squished into the middle range, leaving you with a sound that is dynamically flat, and lacking in true bass response. I'm betting you still wear those stupid earbuds that came with your ipod, too.

does anyone know if they plan on releasing a regular version of this album for vinyl? like a 2 record set. All of his albums are already pressed on vinyl, it would be unfair if they just made 3000 overpriced deluxe sets! I'd pay 80 for it.. tops.. maybe 100 if i feel like working overtime.

ick. i love beck's music & have all of his albums on vinyl. i jumped for joy twice when i heard "the information" was finally being released for me to play on my turntable. this set looks really neat - very stylish & all, but really... $175? fuck that. i'm an audio geek, but i'm no sucker. i think beck forgot that most of his fans aren't pulling down the same amount per year that he is. put out a version with JUST the information album with cardboard grid packaging (those deluxe remixes are crap anyway), slap a $40 price tag on it cause it's "exclusive audiophile quality" or some nonsense & then i'll buy it.

Has anyone heard this? It could be a complete waste of money, especially if the vinyl sounds anywhere near as bad as the CD. The CD of THE INFORMATION has the worst mastering of any Beck album, and is a fine example of good music sounding unbearable. Usually special care is taken with LP mastering, but without confirmation of a great sounding record, I would be hesitant to gamble $175.

What? I think The Information is the most crisp sounding of his recordings so far! and I've heard em all!

I agree trbnado. The cd is grating and over compressed. I ordered the vinyl and hope it close to the quality of Guero. That record is a joy to listen to.
